Healthy Monday: Local Or Organic?

photography: mconlonllc

Grist asked a great question the other day: What's more important - going local or going organic?

Lets assume that "both" is not an option. My first reaction was local, which reduces transportation and supports my local economy. Then I thought about it again. Purchasing organic gives continuing support to the organic movement, which is imperative if we wish to further the importance of organic products. Then I thought about it again... I did a lot of thinking (go ahead, make the joke - yes, it made my brain hurt). I don't think there is a black and white answer, but ultimately I am a "go local" gal when pressed with such a question.

What about you? Go local, go organic? Dish out your own 2 cents.

For me, it depends on the food. When it comes to something like corn or potatoes, where pesticide use is super-high and/or conventional versions tend to be GM, definitely organic. With things that are easily washed like leafy greens or lettuces, I tend to go local.

Luckily I live in an area that I can get both local and organic but if I didn't I would go for locally grown produce first and then organic. I want to support my local farmers and I can always let them know I would really LOVE to support them more if they were also organic.

@Glue and Glitter - Excellent point! I have also heard it's not quite an necessary to buy organic on things you peel, like bananas and onions.

@Kaysha - Good for you! I like to think local farmers appreciate the support!

I would say local - when I am at Whole Foods and the sign says that the produce, or coffee, or ice cream, etc, was made less than 100 miles away by a farmer or small business, I get so excited and am much more eager to shell out the extra bucks!
