Start A Tradition: Plant a Tree

Sorry for being MIA yesterday. I'm still trying to kick this cold!

Did you know that in Norway, when two people get married, friends of the newlyweds plant trees on either side of the doorway to their home? It's supposed to be a sign of fertility, but it could also be symbolic of the commitment between you and your husband. For every year you're married, they get a little bigger, stronger, and healthier. If you join the National Arbor Day Foundation, they'll send you 10 free baby trees!

The photo above is a wall decal, found at UncommonAccents.

What a cute idea! I like the wall decal, too. I wish we were getting married and then moving somewhere we would live for our lifetimes, long enough to see trees grow big.

What a worthy tradition. We were married on an estate that was part of an environmental trust. A few months after our wedding, the trustees wrote us asking if we wanted to donate by planting a tree. I think it's time we ponied up the cash to do just that!

@ Mouse - I understand what you mean. My husband and I probably won't live in our current place long enough to see our trees get really big, but it nothing else, it's nice to see them grow while we're here. Alternatively, you could get a bonsai. They can get expensive and require some maintenance, but they are compact and supposed to live for a very long time.

@CluelessCrafter - I think that would be a wonderful idea! Every few years you could go back and visit the estate as part of an anniversary tradition! :)

What a great idea! We're in an apartment now, so maybe we should get a symbolic houseplant. :)
